Qualification Overview
The modern Medical Herbalist or Phytotherapist combines a thorough knowledge of human science, nutrition, communications and assessment skills and a knowledge of materia medica plants, which has been and continues to be the basis of healing in all cultures since ancient times.
The practice of herbal medicine focuses on the individual, not only on the condition. One measure of efficacy of treatment is that the person will have symptoms treated and in addition, gain better health. The contemporary Phytotherapist needs to remain focused on traditional knowledge while also applying critical skills to assess and integrate scientific research into their practice.
This qualification is designed to educate students to become professional Medical Herbalists.
The first two years of the qualification are distance learning. There are, however, two compulsory seminar weeks that students are required to attend in their first and second year of study. These are traditionally held in February and July, the start of each semester.
The third year of the qualification focuses on clinical practice and is delivered at the Christchurch campus.
