Christchurch City
Called the Garden City, Christchurch is known for its parks and gardens, nearby beaches and snowfields and its meandering Avon River.
Christchurch enjoys a temperate climate with daytime summer temperatures averaging between 18 - 25 degrees Celsius. Winter temperatures average from 5 - 15 degrees Celsius. There are occasional frosts and snowfalls.
Christchurch is also the gateway to spectacular scenery and recreation areas of the South Island. There is much to discover while exploring the ragged Southern Alps, the many national parks, lakes and forests and the historic gold fields of the West Coast.
Within an hours drive from downtown Christchurch are pristine ski fields for skiing and snow board enthusiasts. Windsurfing on the estuary and sailing on the Lyttelton Harbour are 20 minutes from the city centre.
For those willing to go a bit further away, there are thermal hot pools to soothe your mind and body at Hanmer Springs and Maruia Springs in the native beech forest of the Lewis Pass.
